NEURO-LINGUISTIC PROGRAMMING (NLP)Page 2 of 7 NLP is, in essence, a model that incorporates techniques for improving communication, stimulating personal change and growth and accelerating learning. It is very much a pragmatic structure for facilitating learning and change. Many different theories are incorporated into the structure of NLP. Bandler and Grinder called their model "Neuro – Linguistic Programming" because the "Neuro" part referred to the source of our experience which originates in our senses and is mediated by our neurological mechanisms. The "Linguistic" part is to do with the fact that we order our thoughts and communicate our ideas through language. The "Programming" part is referring to the way we choose to organise our ideas and filter what we see, hear and feel. Most important of all is that indubitable fact that NLP is an extraordinary rich source of material for the social worker or anyone concerned with understanding other people or personal change. Within this very brief overview, we will touch upon the Milton Model and aspects of rapport building and communication skills as well as indicate the key beliefs of NLP.
