COMMON ASSESSMENT FRAMEWORK (CAF)Please see our Risk Options section The Common Assessment Framework (CAF) is a model of assessment which is based upon the Framework for the Assessment of Children and their Families which was introduced to childcare social work in 2000. It is a holistic model designed to look at what is happening in a child's life "in the round" and thus takes in to account impacts (positive and negative) on the child from conditions operative within the child, parenting / carer capacity and family and other environmental factors. The CAF is advocated as the standard model for assessment for agencies that may be working with a child and its parents but at a level below Child Protection and Child in Need involvement. The CAF may be undertaken by a single agency which wishes to gain a better, more complete picture of the child's life (this is known as "lower tier") or several agencies ("upper tier") may combine to offer a multi-agency response to the child's needs. All CAF assessment and work is conducted in full agreement and partnership with the child's carers' who may refuse, if they wish, the offer of a CAF. The course contains a mixture of short presentations and small group exercises coupled with main group discussion. One Day course.
