COMMON CORE KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

The Every Child Matters set of Common Core knowledge and skills set is available through various combinations of Osiris courses.

The Six areas of Common Core are the following:

  1. Effective communication and engagement with children, young people and their families and carers.

  2. Child and young person development

  3. Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children

  4. Supporting transitions

  5. Multi-agency working

  6. Sharing information

On a number of our courses we extend beyond (well beyond) the common core set as in some areas we believe the Common Core is lacking in some areas of both knowledge and skill areas for social work practice. An example of this is in the area of Values in social work which is very commonly interpreted as simply meaning "ethics". It is far deeper than this in several very important ways - see our page on Judgement . Another area under-emphasised by Common Core is the role of Reflection and Evidence-based practice as an area of competence in its own right. The Common Core is also rather basic throughout its entirety although we do agree that the basics are essential.
