**DIRECT WORK WITH CHILDREN**
(Working with Children to improve their lives)

Note for Osiris College customers: this two day course on Direct Work is available as an Osiris College buy a place course. It is intended for anyone who works with children or young people. The course will prove invaluable to social care staff, foster carers, nursery workers, child-minders, school-teachers and other professionals in similar areas of work. No special previous knowledge is assumed. The course is serious but also fun. Do not wear posh clothes as we do paint (amongst many other things)!

This course therefore covers working both with younger children (below aged 11) and older children / young people. The course is primarily practical "hands on" skills-based but not ignoring theoryReference will be made to the following knowledge / theoretical aspects:

Attachment Theory and Relationships

                                                Psychodynamic Theory

                                                Cognitive Behavioural Theory

                                                Identity Development

Social Development and Culture

Language Development

Intellectual Development & Education

Physical Development & Health

Resilience and Protective Factors

The background theory of this course will draw on elements of Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy including NLP and Brief Therapy. However, the art section especially will include reference to Attachment Theory and Psychodynamic theory and Jungian Archetypes with alternative Freudian interpretations available (handouts will accompany all sections of the training). Materials (art and play) will be provided.

This course does not presume extensive background knowledge and we have run the course many times in the past with unqualified as well as qualified staff within the participant audience.

 Learning Objectives:

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

·        Demonstrate improved knowledge and skills in establishing rapport with children and young people.

·        Demonstrate improved knowledge and skills in developing an effective participative relationship with children
     and young people.

·        Demonstrate improved knowledge and skills in effective communication with children and young people.

·        Demonstrate awareness in using participatory methods with children and young people such as Art Work, Play
    Therapy and Metaphor (story telling).

·        Demonstrate improved knowledge and skills in terms of using scaling methodology of setting baselines for
     effective intervention and outcome evaluation.

·        Demonstrate improved knowledge and skills in specific techniques of “active engagement” of children and
     young people.

·        Demonstrate enhanced knowledge of the rights of children and young people and work effectively to enable
     children to exercise these rights.

·        Feel empowered in terms of working effectively with children and young people.

We cover models of direct work, preparation and planning for direct work, the importance of child observation, some aspects of background psychological theory, and various techniques for undertaking direct work. Specific techniques taught on this course include: art-work (includes section on Jungian Archetypes - not taught in terms of art interpretation but more in terms of showing that deeper meaning can be present), life map, making and using puppets, using metaphor and story as an intervention and building and maintaining rapport with children and young people. This two-day course comprises an introduction to what is identified in recent research as an essential treatment strategy (Life Story Work) for all children who have been abused, no matter what the care plan might be. We end with an exercise on designing a programme of direct work intervention.

Course Key Texts:

Children Act 1989 (HMSO)

Guidance to Children Act 1989 Volumes 1 – 9 and Index volume 10. (HMSO)

Local SSD C&F Procedures volumes 1 and 2.

Course Handout

Selected Supplementary Reading:

Holmes J (2001) The Search for the Secure Base (Brunner-Routledge)

          Bandler R & Grinder J (1979) Frogs into Princes.

This course is, without any shadow of doubt, best taught as a two-trainer course and we have run it mostly as a two trainer course. Participants get the benefit of Judith’s knowledge and expertise as well as Alan’s. We have very different styles and knowledge bases and the course works best when we both train it. However, it can be offered as a one trainer course.
