**INTRODUCTION TO CHILD PROTECTION**

Note for Osiris College customers: this course is a one day general introduction to child protection and is available through Osiris College on a buy a place basis. It is intended for anyone who has - in the course of their work or leisure activities - contact with children or young people and thus need to be aware of how to notice whether a child may be being abused and the process of reporting child abuse. Please note that we do not use images of children having suffered maltreatment in this training.

This one day course is designed to equip people having contact with children, either directly or indirectly through their work, to attain a basic level of understanding and competence regarding child protection practice. The course is suitable for Children and Families, Adult or Mental Health social care staff, qualified or unqualified and all other individuals who need to have this basic awareness / knowledge within the course of their work or leisure activity. The course is intended to provide a fundamental grounding in the basics of child protection practice. Various presentations and small group exercises occur throughout the day.

 Time 9.30am – 4.30pm

 Participants attending this training will demonstrate:

• Develop understanding of the philosophy and history of child protection practice within the UK.
• Develop understanding of the main categories of child abuse definitions and other categorisations which have practice importance such as organisational abuse, domestic violence and bullying.
• Develop understanding of the legal context to child protection
• Develop understanding of the child protection process within the context of equal opportunities and anti-oppressive practice.
• Develop awareness of what constitutes child abuse and patterns of causation.
• Develop awareness of the importance of values and attitudes and how they are embedded within the child protection process and can bias perceptions on child maltreatment.
• Develop understanding of the Signs and Symptoms of child abuse – what to look for.
• Develop understanding of the Child Protection Procedures: Whose responsibility is it to refer? How to refer and the referral process and what happens next.

The course is very condensed and participants must expect to start on time and finish not before the due time. The course has a main handout and an extensive exercise / handout re Signs & Symptoms of Maltreatment.
