RAPPORT & MOTIVATING MOTIVATION

Note for Osiris College customers: this course available as a buy a place course. It is a one-day introduction to the subject of building rapport and motivation. It will prove invaluable to anyone involved with personal change. This course does not assume any prior knowledge.

This one day (or commissioned one day or two-day) course is an introductory course about how to build rapport and motivate people. It does not represent a "magic wand" as all techniques to help motivation require at least the willingness to "try it" on behalf of the person. If you can't get that far you'd have better luck motivating a cabbage to sing. However, the techniques of rapport and engaging people are very much in the foreground of motivation and if you haven't got those techniques well and truly under your belt then you are unlikely to succeed as a motivator. The one thing you can be sure about is that Canute Error (telling people what to do) isn't going to work. And dire threats are not very helpful. So we look at how to build and maintain rapport on this course.

This course is very much "hands on" skills based learning and involves much use of the self - you have to try it and work through it before even thinking about trying it on other people. And this applies to doing any kind of personal change work with other people. Please note that this course is not intended as a "clap-your-hands motivating you" type of course - the course is about the complex subject of motivation and how to go about assessing it and enhancing it and, where possible, instilling it.

Learning Objectives: by the end of the course participants will have developed understanding and skills in terms of:

  • Rapport: how to build it and maintain it.

  • The structure of Motivation - its components

  • How Motivation radically differs from co-operation and compliance

  • The unconscious and its role - forget or ignore it at your peril.

  • Belief and changing beliefs

  • Supporting beliefs as "webs of reasons" behind Motivation or its lack.

  • Emotion and desire within Motivation

  • Modes of neurological representation

  • Techniques of intervention to change or improve Motivation

Given what is said above about the capacity to build rapport and engage people, this course is most usefully conjoined with our rapport building course as a commissioned two-day training.  We can't emphasise enough just how important this set of "precursor skills" are to working with people to improve their motivation.
