SIGNS & SYMPTOMS OF MENTAL ILL HEALTH

This two day course is concerned to teach the fundamentals of the diagnostics (signs and symptoms) of common mental illnesses. The course will also re-cap on theories of causation. We will look at the range of common depressive and mood disorders, anxiety and phobias, schizophrenia, organic disorders such as dementia and some disorders that can be mistaken for mental illness.  This course extends the Introduction to Mental Health course and directly connects with the course on Mental Status Examination and Risk.

LEARNING THEMES: by the end of the course, participants will have understanding and awareness re the importance of the following:

  Signs and Symptomology of:

·        Anxiety conditions including phobias

·        Depressive and mood disorders, including bi-polar depression and suicide / self-harm.

·        Schizophrenia and Schizo-Affective disorders

·        Dementias

·        Some common conditions that mimic mental illness

·        Medication treatments

Please Note: the psychotherapeutic treatment of these conditions (other than medication) is dealt with in the Models of Mind and Models of Intervention two day courses.
