RISK TRAINING & CHILD PROTECTION OPTIONS

All Stages / Courses come with extensive handout materials including many special Risk Tools.

Stage 1 Introduction to Child Protection (usually 1 day)

Exploring the value base of child protection (including personal values), basic risk, basic signs and symptoms; S17 and S47; thresholds of “harm”; what to refer and how, the process of making a referral and what happens next.

A different focus Stage 1 is available for Minute Takers This awareness course is intended for Case Conference Minute Takers.

Stage 2 Common Assessment Framework (CAF) Training (1 day)

CAF training for non – Social Services staff.  Takes participants through the fundamentals of completing CAF. We would recommend that all participants have completed Stage 1 or equivalent.

Stage 3 Child Protection
Safeguarding & Promoting Welfare
(two days)

This course is normally taught above Stage 1 level but a special version combining Stage 1 is available. 

Basic risk theory, the difference between analysis and assessment; normative models; Initial and Core Assessment processes; S17 and S47; the Framework for Assessment; value base; thresholds of “harm”; role play Case Conference; Partnership working with other agencies and families; framing outcomes that make sense and which are testable.

Stage 4 Child Protection 
(advanced two days)

Analysis and Assessment; working with various models of risk; the Framework for Assessment as a “Risk” model; the process of Core Assessment in detail; Outcomes and their formulation and testability.

Risk definition and the 6 dimensions of Risk are also included. This course includes a generic but extensive Osiris Assessing Risk Tool. If time is available the course contains some information on Error Theory.

Stage 5 Child Protection:

Risk Models  (one day)

This course concerns the use of various Risk Models to help determine levels of risk.
Stage 5: Child Protection (two days)

Chairing Case Conferences

Special course designed for Case Conference chairs and including elements of analysis, risk theory, decision-making and error theory.

Stage 5 Child Protection: Error Theory and Mistakes (minimum 1 day). This essential aspect of Risk Management is intended for Managers / Senior Practitioners or very experienced workers. It is most definitely NOT suitable for unqualified social care staff or even some qualified staff from non-social services agencies.

Risk Management, Risk perception, Objective / subjective probability theory; the nature of probability; risk ready and risk adverse strategies; game theory and partnership working; decision theory and models of decision and a detailed exposition on the nature of error and mistakes deriving from decision theory research and child death Inquiries.

Risk Management (2 day course) Combines Error Theory course with other aspects of Risk and Decision Theory.
Making Decisions Combines Risk Theory with Decision Theory. This course is intended for Chairs and Managers.
Child Death Overview Panel and Serious Case Reviews Training options of Error Theory, Risk Management, Risk Theory and Decision Theory and independent advisory / consultancy service

Section 17 / 47 Training Programme: 5 days block

Full course (except CAF) combining all of the above except the specialist error theory course and Risk Management courses.

Mental Health & Child Protection

Child care staff specialist course. Includes special Osiris Pre-Birth Risk Tool

Kinship Care Assessment

Child care staff specialist course. Includes special Osiris Kinship Care Risk Tool

Emotional Harm & Abuse

One Day 

or Two Day (staff)

Can be pitched to either multi-agency or childcare specialist staff. Includes Osiris Emotional Harm Risk Tool. Staff are strongly recommended to attend the Osiris Attachment Theory course prior to undertaking this course.

Neglect

One Day

or Two Day (staff)

Can be pitched to either multi-agency or childcare specialist staff. Includes special Osiris Neglect Risk Tool

Sexual Abuse (Victims)

One Day

or Two Day (staff)

 

Can be pitched to either multi-agency or childcare specialist staff. Includes Osiris Sexual Abuse Risk Tool. Staff are strongly recommended to attend the Osiris Attachment Theory course prior to undertaking this course.
Sexual Abuse (Perpetrators)

One Day

or Two Day (Staff)

Can be pitched to either multi-agency or childcare specialist staff. Includes Osiris Sexual Abuser Assessment Risk Tool

Please note that we are perfectly happy to run "combined" training events where several Children's Department's club together to buy in places on a course. This arrangement can sometimes better enable training events to be arranged for very experienced staff who often miss out on training because they are comparatively few in number within any single Department. Contact us to discuss options.
