Alan holds a Master's degree in social work, psychology and social policy in addition to two Bachelor degrees in philosophy and in science and philosophy. He holds the Certificate of Qualification in Social Work, the Certificate of Education (post compulsory), two Diplomas in Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy and a Practitioner NLP Certificate. He is a multiple published author in social work.

Alan qualified in social work in 1982 at the London School of Economics and has many years post qualified experience. He has worked for several Local Authorities and an NSPCC Special Family Unit as a Child Care Social Worker, Practice Teacher; and Approved Social Worker (ASW) under the Mental Health Act. He has also worked as an Emergency Duty Team (EDT) Manager, Manager of a C&F Referral & Assessment Team and as a Senior Training Officer, Children and Families. He has worked as an approved PQ Assessor / Mentor.

Alan has worked privately for more than twenty years as a Psychotherapist and Hypnotherapist specialising in treatment using Neuro - Linguistic Programming (NLP), Brief Therapy and Hypno-Analysis.

One of Alan's specialisms is decision theory and the analysis of risk and on how risk is assessed within the Framework for Assessment. He is the author of several social care publications including Chapter 6: “Risk and the Framework for Assessment” in Martin Calder and Simon Hackett (eds) (2003) Assessment in child care: Using and developing frameworks for practice and a paper for BASW Practice Journal on “Game Theory and Partnership in Child Protection Practice.” He has also delivered GLPQ PQ and Local Authority Managers training seminars on “Error Theory in Social Care” (child death and mistakes in practice) and has written and published on this topic. Alan’s other main specialism is Attachment Theory and he has been commissioned to write Expert Witness Reports for Court involving this subject as well as delivering many Attachment training days for social care staff and foster carers.

Alan's general interests include Psychoanalysis and the Philosophy of Mind. He is especially interested in processes of mind (conscious and unconscious) and how such processes can be distorted into neuroticism and psychopathology following early and traumatic (often abusive) experiences as a child. He also offers personal therapy to social care staff and members of the public.

Both Directors are Criminal Records Bureau (enhanced) checked and both are registered social workers with the General Social Care Council (to be incorporated into the Health Professions Council).
